Business Spotlight: Heylee B's

One of the first things people fall in love with in Franklin is its historic downtown. And frankly, that is one of our favorite things about Franklin too. The charming assortment of shops, down-home restaurants, and surrounding arts and crafts community gives our city of almost 69,000 a small-town feel. This is why local business owner, Heylee B Atchen, opened her self-named makeup and clothing boutique in the heart of downtown nearly four months ago. She believed Franklin was a good match for her; it was cute, homey, and as a small-town Tennessee girl, that was just what she was looking for.

After an active career as a makeup artist took her all over the country, she wanted to move closer to home and start creating the business she’d grown up dreaming about –a community that redefined beauty aside from vanity and empowered women to be confident in who they are right now.  What began as a boutique via Facebook sales and trunk shows has grown into her booming new storefront ten years later.

Heylee B’s unique, whole-hearted vision isn’t the only thing that sets her boutique apart. Price point is a big deal. They want everyday women to feel pretty without having to be super models, so they maintain affordability without sacrificing quality or style. (Seriously, we want at least one of everything in the store.) The shop also features its own mineral liquid makeup line and three artists on staff who perform expert on/offsite application, as well as host makeup workshops and DIY nights.

We went with our own Ally Heithcock, avid Heylee B shopper, to her holiday makeup application. Store manager and makeup artist Mary Kadar gave Ally a subtle eye and bold Boysenberry lip.

Mary started with a foundation of their custom mineral liquid makeup designed to complement both oily and dry skin. (Mineral liquid simply means it’s the cleanest you can get without being organic.)

For the eyes, Mary chose to simply line them using a gel liner and a brush instead of a pencil. In fact, Heylee B’s doesn’t sell pencil liners because the line is too harsh and unnatural. The idea is that makeup is meant for enhancing what’s already there, not for covering up.

Mary’s secret is the lip. When doing a bold lip, use a nude waterproof lip liner to keep the color from bleeding off. Then, dab the lip color (in this case one of Heylee’s favorites, Boysenberry) with a brush and apply to lips; next, define with Boysenberry liner; and lastly, touch up the edges with concealer.

BAM AND GLAM.

Heylee B’s is the real deal in every way and exemplifies why we love shopping local here in middle Tennessee. Whether you want to freshen up your face or are hunting for great gifts, this genuine and chic shop will capture your heart the moment you walk in.
